New Year's Eve: one night only but a whole lot of high expectations.

In the lead up to December 31st spirits are high, the plans are popping off for weeks over Whatsapp, and everyone's decided it's going to be 'THE BIGGEST NIGHT OF THE YEAR.'

But then the big day rolls round and just like last year... it's a bit of a letdown. At best you lose an eyelash and at worst your sanity. Celebrating the past 365 days of the year - or trying to forget them - isn't easy to get right.

So, to help you manage expectations, here's a reminder of our NYE fantasies ahead of time, versus the worst-case realities on the night. If your night manages falls somewhere inbetween then you've definitely won New Year's.

Getting ready

Fantasy

Ready for all the close-ups.

Vs reality

No pain, no gain. Actually - just pain.

Your entrance

Fantasy

Strike a pose.

Vs reality

Tripping on your too-tight heels and dragging your BFF down with you.

The lead up to 12 o'clock

Fantasy

Champagne a popping, confetti flying and all the bangers are players.

Vs reality

You don't leave the house until 11:30 - pre drinking takes precedence, as does waiting for your friend to finally finish her makeup.

The toasts

Fantasy

Champagne on ice.

Vs reality

Shots, shots, shots. The hangover is 2016's problem.

The dance floor

Fantasy

Beyonce has nothing on you and your girlfriends.

Vs reality

It's hard to have rythm with a drink in your hand.

The midnight kiss

Fantasy

Swoon

Vs reality

Your friend's brother or the dog are the best option. You'll probably go with the dog.

The early hours

Fantasy

Dancing til dawn.

Vs reality

Seriously, who can stay up past 1am these days?

You know it's time to go home when...

Fantasy

The final fireworks have flown.

Vs reality

This happens...

The next day

Fantasy

A civilised walk followed by lunch with the family.

Vs reality

Oh the headache. You definitely won't be leaving the house today. And that mess is tomorrow's problem.

Never mind, there's always next year. Happy New Year!
