You’d be forgiven for thinking that every guy on Tinder either sends constant dick pics, has ridiculous pictures of himself, and basically acts like a massive douche. Thankfully, though, a new Tinder bot proves that this isn’t the case.
A while back, we reported on Bye Felipe, a trending instagram account that published screenshots from conversations where girls didn’t respond to guys, and the guys got angry.
‘It all started when a woman on Facebook posted a screenshot of some messages she got on OKCupid. It was a man saying he wanted to start a conversation, and she didn’t respond. Twelve hours later, he just replied “Asshole”,’ founder Alexandra Tweten told The Debrief.
‘I thought it was really funny. I’d recently gotten a message too: this guy had sent the same message to me three times in a month and when I finally just said no he came back with, “Why the fuck not?”’
This sparked Karen X Cheng, who works on viral content for brands and companies, and a few friends (Paul Mestemaker from CleverPoint and Lisa Winning, CEO of HeTexted), to look into it further. ‘You know how you hear about all those Tinder horror stories of men turning hostile on women, like Bye Felipe? We wondered how common those message are,’ she told us.
‘We built a Tinder bot to right-swipe on thousands of men. Then we analysed their messages and behaviour. We were actually pleasantly surprised by the results.’
The bot used images of Lisa, and of the 2,000 men the bot right-swiped and ignored (a thousand in NYC and a thousand in San Francisco) literally no men had a go at her. Plus, over a thousand messaged her, after being right-swiped.
The words used in the messages were also monitored, and while over 30 used ‘beautiful’, literally no one said ‘fuck’, ‘slut’, ‘bitch’, ‘fat’ or ‘ugly’. Which, according to most articles about men on Tinder, is a surprise. A really nice surprise.
As she writes on the site: ‘It’s the negative stories that get all the attention. Stories about men being decent and polite just aren’t as interesting as stories of men being jerks. But here it is. Evidence that the vast majority of guys are actually pretty decent. For every asshole, there are a thousand invisible gentlemen.’
Preach.
