Yesterday was World Emoji Day, and to celebrate, Apple has announced it will launch 56 new emojis later this year.
Apple has been continually developing their emoji library to broaden its diversity and make it representational of more people and cultures. Before now, Apple made a move to introduce emojis that were more racially and gender diverse, and created characters that represented women as athletes, career professionals, construction workers, etc, in an attempt to break down gender stereotypes. Then, it was announced that (finally) red-headed emojis are due to land in 2018.
As Apple develops its pictograms, it’s becoming easier and easier to illustrate what you want to on social media. To improve its usability further, Apple’s latest batch of emoji characters will include a whole host of new icons, including a woman wearing a hijab, a woman breastfeeding, a man meditating and a man with a beard.
The batch of new icons will also include animals such as a dinosaur, a zebra and mythical characters such as zombies, elves and a genie. What is more, there will also be more food options, including a steak, a coconut and a sandwich.
As expected the batch will also feature new smilies, including a vomiting face, a starry-eyed face and a wacky face - the emojis Jeremy Burge, the head of emoji resource Emojipedia and creator of World EmojiDay, expect will be most popular.
And not forgetting the red-headed emojis we were promised - Burge assures they are on the agenda for 2018, along with curly hair and a bald headed person.
The new emojis are expected to launch in iOS 11 this autumn.
