We Need To Talk About The Ugandan Singer Jailed For 'Porn' Video

Jemimah Kansiime is a Ugandan singer who performs under the name of Panadol wa Basajja, which roughly translates as ‘medicine for men’.

Well, she was, until authorities jailed her under stringent new pornography laws due to a video she made. She’s said to be the first person given a full trial under a law, which was came into force in February 2014, just around the same time Uganda made it illegal for people to be gay (with life in prison being the punishment).

This is the video she stars in for In Ensolo Yange and truly, we’ve seen loo roll adverts that are more risqué than this:

As you can see, the video features Jemimah with her be-thonged bum out, soaping it and twerking it. While Jemimah says she’s inspired by the likes of Rihanna and Nicki Minaj – who themselves face a lot of flack for dancing with their own bodies in their music videos as if any part of a woman using her own body is indecent or improper – the video is hardly as risqué as, say, Pour It Up or Anaconda.

‘When I was making that video I never intended it for children, I intended it for adults. I did not sell or distribute the song,’ she told AFP.

The song’s pretty catchy too, but obviously the Ugandan authorities are having none of it.

Jemimah and her former manager, Didi Muchwa Mugisha, were both arrested in November. While Mugisha pleaded guilty and was forced to pay a fine of 200,000 Ugandan shillings (£43), Jemimah refused to plead guilty and so was jailed for five weeks, reports the Telegraph.

She’s since been bailed but faces trial and a sentence of up to 10 years under the new law.

‘My rights have been trampled upon; my freedom of expression has been trampled upon,’ she said.
