While in the UK classic choices such as Olivia, Amelia and Charlotte rule the baby name charts, worldwide it’s a different story. According to babynamewizard.com, Sofia (and all it’s other variants) is the most popular name globally with it topping the list of popular girls names in eight countries.
The site’s founder Laura Wattenberg assessed data from 48 countries and found that Sofia is currently the most popular name for a baby girl in Mexico, Russia, Chile, Estonia, Slovakia, Argentina, Italy* and* Switzerland. Plus, it comes in second or third place in a further 20 regions. It seems it is a name that truly transcends cultures.
‘It just blew me away that so many different languages and cultures would arrive at the same sound at the same time. I guess that really says something about the way culture is transmitted today,’ Wattenberg told Live Science.
