Barbie maufacturing company Mattel have been praised across social media for defying social stereostypes and including a boy for the first time in their latest TV ad.
While the doll itself – the Limited Edition Moschino Barbie – sold out on the day it was released (November 9th) the accompanying gender-fair advertisement posted to YouTube has only recently been picked up on.
The advert opens, as you'd expect, on a shot of Barbie, which is followed by one of a girls holding the doll, enthusiastically announcing: "She's the most Moschino Barbie everrr!"
More close-ups of the doll ensue, before the camera turns its attention to a boy – one of three children featured in the ad. With his hair in a mohawk, the boy exclaims to the camera: "Moschino Barbie is SO fierce!" before placing a miniature handbag on Barbie's arm.
In a later shot, Moschino Barbie's mobile rings and the boy turns to the camera to say: "It's for you Moschino Barbie!" before – rather adorably - winking.
With almost 1.5million views so far, the advert is swiftly gaining momentum – helped, no doubt, by the overwhelmingly positive feedback it's received on social media.
As for us: we're thrilled to see it acknowledged that boys are interest in what is such a historic and popular toy.
We look forward to seeing more gender-fair toy ads like this in future.
