Following the lead of The Co-op, Morrisons supermarkets are giving students 10% discount on food and drink, including wine and beer. According to The Guardian and Rebecca Singleton, the director of local solutions at Morrisons, the supermarket ‘listened to students and they told us that they would be more loyal to a supermarket that offered the sort of discount that they get on rail travel, clothes and eating out.'

By teaming up with UNiDAYS, the online student discount portal, they will be trailing the scheme throughout their 492 UK stores, it will also be available in the cafes and petrol stations, but not for online shopping – so no hungover online shopping then. It will initially be rolled out as a three-month trial, but if it’s successful it will be rolled out permanently.

According to a NatWeststudent living research students are sending an average of £19.78 a week on food and drink shopping – so in the long run the thought of shopping in a supermarket that accommodates students sounds ideal. It's probably the only positive thing about being a student and money right now, student loans anyone? Or how about the fact that 50% of students can’t afford basic rent and bills, with rents increasing by 20% in two years in student accommodation? 10% might not seem like a lot, but it all adds up and it's great to see local supermarkets attempting to help find a small fix to a much bigger issue. Tesco and Sainsbury's, listen up. You’ve got competition for your student shoppers, it’s time to roll out the discounts.
