Mooncup Is In Trouble: It Got An Inspection From the FDA After Two Users With IUDs Got Sick

Mooncup is loved the world over by its adoring fans (you’ll know when you meet a Mooncup user – because they’ll sing its praises).

The company – who manufacture menstrual cups and are based in Brighton – got a visit from the American FDA – that’s the public health services across the pond.

A Reddit user posted a damning letter sent to Mooncup from the FDA after their inspection – which didn’t go well.

The letter – which is dense and packed with FDA-speak – reveals that two patients with IUDs (the coil) experienced problems after using a Mooncup, but that the brand failed to report these instances to the FDA within 30 days of them occuring.

One user experienced an ectopic pregnancy and a ruptured fallopian tube after her IUD was dislodged by a Mooncup, while another developed Toxic Shock Syndrome.

One user wrote: ‘The FDA is a joke, they also want to ban all vitamins and herbals as dangerous. Also in our country they have only ever banned a small amount of very harmful chemicals, while other countries have ban lists that reach 6 digits.’

Another user – who doesn’t seem to be so bothered by the FDA - gets busy Mooncup as ‘like a shot glass for your vagina’. Excellent imagery there, and actually quite accurate.

On a side note, imagine that being your job: being sent over from quiet Silver Spring in Maryland (population: 76,000) to inspect a factory full of menstrual cups in Brighton, hen party central of the UK.

Just imagine.
