Showing your ex just how much you’ve moved on since those early days of weeping over your Facebook feed is what we all strive for – but a newish app can make that priceless sense of closure come all the quicker.
Venmo – which lets you transfer money for free – launched in 2012 and everyone raved about it being the next PayPal. Now though, it seems one of its lesser-known functions serves as a great way to reinforce what a great life you’re having through its ‘social’ component.
How it works is that your list of transactions becomes public – meaning any time you use the app, it shows other Venmo users that you’ve just splashed the cash. Thankfully it doesn’t display the monetary amount you’ve just blown (cheeky £15.60 on a huge Maccy Ds at 4am? Oops), but it does show the description you’ve written for each transaction.
It’s basically the banking version of Instagram. You can present your life however you want it – yes, you DID just transfer half your paycheck to your friend for that amazing holiday you’ve got coming up; oh HELL yeah that round of cocktails in the secret new pop-up bar you’ve just discovered was mindblowing – and everyone else who can see your Venmo account is either going to have to just deal or else step up their game.
Sure, this app can pay your bills for you too, but if there’s a £60 charge leaving your account, you don’t have to say it’s going straight into the pocket of those British Gas execs…
The best thing about it? It’s a way of semi-bragging without being so obvious about it. Telling your mates that side-splitting anecdote via the medium of a Facebook status replete with emoji is the equivalent of smashing them round the face with a sledgehammer while telling knock-knock jokes – painful and not particularly funny – whereas paying them 1p each “for last night ;)” is smug but in a much more endearing way.
What else have you used Venmo for? We want to hear your stories.
