The first lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, has said she believes the country is ready for a female president – and that it should happen ASAP.

Obama was being interviewed as part of the Working Families Summit when she was asked her thoughts on the idea of a woman being the big boss at the White House.

‘That should happen as soon as possible,’ she said. ‘I think this country is ready. This country is ready for anyone who can do the job.’

She was quick to add that neither gender or race should be a factor in electing the best candidate for the job, but did hint that she would possibly support former secretary of state Hillary Clinton, should she run for the presidency in 2016.

'The person who can do the job doesn’t have a particular gender or race or background or socio-economic status. The person who can do the job is the most qualified and I think we have some options, don’t we?’

The first lady herself doesn’t have any designs on taking over the Oval Office, though, saying she’s ‘positive’ she would never want to run herself.
