Did Melania Trump Copy Her Speech Directly From Michelle Obama?

Melania Trump has spoken. Taking to the stage at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland she spoke passionately of her love of America and vision for the country’s future. Her speech was so good that people gave her a standing ovation and cheered wildly when she finished.

As a prospective first lady in waiting you couldn’t really hope for much more, could you? It all seemed to go so well, until one journalist spotted something awry with Melania’s speech.

Jarret Hill was one of the first people to point out that Melania’s speech, in which she extolled the virtues of her hard work ethic and the family values which were instilled in her by her from a young age, bore a striking similarity to the speech Michelle Obama made in 2008 before she became America’s First Lady. By striking similarity what we really mean is ‘it was basically identical to…’

In fact, one of the most uplifting makes-the-back-of-your-neck-tingle because it’s so inspo parts of the speech was virtually identical to Michelle Obama’s…

Here’s how their speeches compare. We've underlined the sections in bold which bear a little more than a striking similarity to one another...

In 2016 Melania Trump said: ‘My parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise; that you treat people with respect.’

In 2008 Michelle Obama said: ‘And Barack and I were raised with so many of the same values: that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say you're going to do; that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don't know them, and even if you don't agree with them.’

In 2016 Melania Trump said: ‘[My parents] taught me to show the values and morals in my daily life. That is the lesson that I continue to pass along to our son. And we need to pass those lessons on to the many generations to follow, because we want our children in this nation to know that the only limit to your achievements is the strength of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.’

In 2008 Michelle Obama said: ‘And Barack Obama and I set out to build lives guided by these values, and pass them on to the next generations. Because we want our children, and all children in this nation, to know that the only limit to the height of your achievement is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.’

You can see that we've underlined pretty much everything. Well, this is awkward isn’t it, and, somewhat ironic given that this is a speech about hard work and moral integrity.

Donald Trump has of course brushed off the criticism and congratulated his wife on her speech:

Perhaps this will be America’s first copy and paste presidency?

Here’s what Donald Trump’s campaign had to say, tackling the issue head on as per…
