Today is 5th May, a Bank Holiday Monday. But it is also a day that marks 35 years since Margaret Thatcher took office to become Britain's first Prime Minister in 1979.
Thatcher divided the nationduring her three consecutive terms in office and was one of the dominant political figures of 20th century Britain, and whether you liked or loathed her, the influence of Thatcherism on the world today can't be denied. In 2002 Thatcher retired from public speaking after a series of minor strokes, she then died in April 2013 aged 87.
Here are some other (some a bit random) facts from May 1979:

9 May - Liverpool win the Football League First Division title for the 12th time.
21 May - Elton John becomes the first musician from the west to perform live in the Soviet Union.
