We’ve never known 4Chan to be a fluffy happy-go-lucky place of supportiveness and cute whimsy – we’ll save that accolade for Pinterest. However, the message board’s contents have taken a grim turn overnight as a man arrested on charges of murder seemed to upload images of the woman he killed to 4Chan before turning himself into police.
David Kalac, 33, is in custody in Wilsonville, Oregon, after killing his girlfriend Amber Coplin. As part of police investigations, they will be looking at posts on 4Chan that seem to be from Kalac.
Shortly after the body of Amber was found dumped at an apartment block, KIRO 7, a local news channel, found a comment on a story at the Port Orchard Independent which contained a link to 4Chan. On this page, there was a discussion on 4Chan where someone had posted a photo of a dead, naked woman with marks on her throat along with this caption: ‘Check the news for Port Orchard Washington in a few hours’.
The comment next to the photos reads: ‘Her son will be home from school soon. He’ll find her, then call the cops. I just wanted to share the pics before they find me. I bought a BB gun that looks realistic enough. When they come, I’ll pull it and it will be suicide by cop. I understand the doubts. Just check the fucking news. I have to lose my phone now.’
The police found that the images posted to 4Chan ‘matched the deceased’, court documents show. Kalac had also written, ‘She killed me first’ on the bathroom wall and ‘bad news’ on the bedroom blinds of the house they had lived in together.
As much as Kalac’s previous threats against women could have suggested he’d go on to do something majorly fucked up – he’d threatened to kill a different girlfriend last March when she filed a restraining order – the 4Chan post was put up after Amber’s death, so no-one on 4Chan could have stopped it happening.
However, that he allegedly (investigators are still trying to make an official link between Kalac and the 4Chan account) felt the need to show off about what he had done to a bunch of strangers on a banter board is a sign of just how dark things can get on that website…
