Madonna Scraps Her Instagram Tribute To Margaret Thatcher

Imagine, just imagine, how good Madonna could be if she just lost her mobile phone. Because so much of what she does in real life – the Coachella kiss with Drake, getting up from the fall at the BRIT Awards, most of her Rebel Heart album – is great, but so much of what she does online is just, well, far off of the mark.

Cue her uploading a photo of Margaret Thatcher to Instagram (btw, it looks like it itself was a screengrab of a Facebook post) along with the caption: ‘Thank you Margaret Thatcher! #unapologetic.’ The line next to the photo of Margaret was a quote from the now-dead ex-Prime Minister: ‘If you set out to be liked, you would be prepared to compromise on anything at any time, and you would achieve nothing.’

Madonna invoked enough fury from her fans that she deleted the post, with no explanation given, but we would kind of like to hear why she put it up. Sure, when you’re a pop star, and a pop star like Madonna, it makes sense to set out to never get people to like you. But when you’re someone like a politician, it’s probably more effective to be kind to your citizens, eg by not cutting milk subsidies for children in schools or, like, not damaging every single labour union and saying stuff like, ‘There is no such thing as society.’

The biggest irony? We think Madonna deleted the post precisely because she wants people to like her. That, or the ex-wife of a son of a baron (that’s Guy Ritchie, btw) might have finally realised that Margaret Thatcher wasn’t exactly the liberating character she’s so often mistaken for.

The one cure to people holding up Margaret Thatcher as some sort of feminist icon, the supposed ‘proof’ that the Tories are more progressive than any other party? Having just one woman as the leader of any other major party. Come on, it’s 2015 already.
