Kylie Jenner has been accused by Hunger Games actress Amandla Stenberg of "appropriating black culture," for posting a picture on Instagram of her hair in cornrows.
Kylie posted a snap of the hair braids to her Instagram page and the 16-year-old actress vented her frustrations on Kylie’s Instagram picture and wrote: ‘ When u appropriate black features and culture but fail to use ur position of power to help black Americans by directing attention towards ur wigs instead of police brutality or racism #whitegirlsdoitbetter.' (sic)
Kylie replied: ‘Mad if I don't, Mad if I do…. Go hang w Jaden or something.'
The message referenced Jaden Smith, who Kylie was rumoured to have dated last year before hooking up with rapper Tyga.
Amandla went to prom with Jaden in May and it seems there may well be some bad blood between the two girls over the young actor.
This is not the first time Amandla has discussed issues of cultural appropriation - earlier this year she released a video entitled ‘What would America be like if we loved black people as much as love black culture?’
In the film she said: "Appropriation occurs when a style leads to racist generalisations or stereotypes where it originated but is deemed as high-fashion, cool or funny when the privileged take it for themselves. Hip hop stems from a black struggle, it stems from jazz and blues, styles of music African-Americans created to retain humanity in the face of adversity. On a smaller scale but in a similar vein, braids and cornrows are not merely stylistic. They're necessary to keep black hair neat."
