Oh my goodness shield your eyes, prepare to gasp, don’t even look at the internet because National Geographic has released a horrific video of two penguins fighting over a lady penguin for it's new series, and it’s so brutal I can’t even. The internet has also gone mad for it, naturally.
Apparently what happened was that a male penguin returned home from a hunt (we assume) only to find his penguin wife shacked up with some other guy. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m sure she had her reasons for leaving. Maybe he was controlling, or maybe we just wasn’t a very nice penguin and she’d had enough. But flee the nest she did and got cosy with someone else.
The male penguin, quite clearly, did not approve of this sudden change. So he went into fight or flight mode. Fight being the operative word here – he bloody went for it. The National Geographic video shows every single slap, bite and eye gorge (yes, bloody eyes) between the two males as they battle for the love of the lady penguin.
Tell me you didn’t watch that without gasping and hiding behind your hands? He even tries to ask his wife who she wants to be with, and she chooses the other penguin. Burn. So obviously the next best thing to do is to fight the other penguin. When will they learn.
This doesn’t work…and it’s him to has to leave. I have never felt so sorry for a penguin in my entire life. Nor will I look at them with the same adoring eyes that I used to after seeing them fight till the death with blood and sweat. Painful Nat Geo. PAINFUL. Twitter agrees with me.
