In a series of Tweets on Monday evening, Hillary Clinton revealed she is coming back to politics. After losing the American presidential election she did what anyone would do – she took a break. She went for a hike and generally fell off the radar. But, now, six months on she’s back with a bang.
‘The last few months, I've been reflecting, spending time with family—and, yes, taking walks in the woods.’ She said over a series of tweets, ‘We're launching Onward Together to encourage people to get involved, organize, and even run for office…More than ever, I believe citizen engagement is vital to our democracy. I'm so inspired by everyone stepping up to organize and lead…This year hasn't been what I envisioned, but I know what I'm still fighting for: a kinder, big-hearted, inclusive America. Onward!’
After praising a series of small, grass-roots organisations, Clinton explained that her new venture, which is registered as a social welfare non-profit company, will act as an umbrella group helping to support the liberal movement and oppose Trump’s government.
With similar branding to Hilary’s own presidential campaign, Onward Together describes it’s mission as: ‘advancing the vision that earned nearly 66 million votes in the last election. By encouraging people to organize, get involved, and run for office, Onward Together will advance progressive values and work to build a brighter future for generations to come.’
‘Citizen engagement at every level is central to a strong and vibrant democracy. In recent months, we've seen what's possible when people come together to resist bullying, hate, falsehoods, and divisiveness, and stand up for a fairer, more inclusive America.
‘From the Women's March to airports where communities are welcoming immigrants and refugees to town hall meetings in every community, Americans are speaking up and speaking out like never before.
‘The challenges we face as a country are real. But there's no telling what we can achieve if we approach the fights ahead with the passion and determination we feel today, and bring that energy into 2017, 2018, 2020, and beyond. Onward!’ It adds.
The New York Times has noted that the type of non-profit status Onward Together has registered with is often associated with a side of politics Clinton has been criticised for associating with. The company allows donors to remain anonymous, which breeds what’s called ‘dark money’ in politics, which can allow the wealthy to have power and sway over the conversation.
