If Hillary Clinton's aim was to make us hate Donald Trump even more in just 30 seconds, she's succeeded. An advert called ‘Mirrors’ has been released by Camp Hillary, with a specific focus on Donald Trump’s sexist views. The short video features Trump’s comments on women, alongside clips of young American girls scrutinising their appearances in the mirror.
While all of the remarks from Trump in the video are degrading to women, some are particularly nauseating. Trump says that 'a person who is flat-chested is very hard to be a ten', and refuses to comment when asked if he treats women with respect. He also refers to unnamed women as being slobs, eating 'like a pig' and having fat ugly faces. Not that this sort of misogyny is new for Trump – even as far back as 1991 he said that what matters for women is having a 'young and beautiful piece of ass'.
This isn’t the first time Clinton has made herself the common-sense candidate for American women and girls; her campaign for presidency features commitments to closing the gender pay gap, tackling violence against women, and protecting women’s rights across the globe. Trump’s campaign website, unsurprisingly, fails to specifically mention women’s rights issues once, despite the fact that the US is rated 60th globally for women’s political empowerment, and there is less than one woman for every five men in congress.
The message of Hillary’s new advert is not just for women, but aims to tug the hearts strings of everyone with a daughter. We’re left with the question ‘Is this the president we want for our daughters?’. Hell no, Hillary.
