This is a Debrief public service announcement: there’s one week left to register to votein next month’s general election.

We’ve teamed up with designer Clio Peppiatt to make some limited-edition election t-shirts. If you can get five people who aren’t registered, get them to sign up to vote before the deadline (22nd May) and send screenshots of their confirmation to theteam@thedebrief.co.uk then not only will you have a say in your future, you’ll get one of these very special t-shirts (although get in there quickly guys, the t-shirts are limited edition, so we can only give them away while stocks last).

It’s a no brainer but here are some reasons why you should register to vote right away, it takes less than five minutes and will be the best thing you do all day:

  • Your future will be affected by the outcome of this election. It’s particularly important because Brexit is, without a doubt, one of the most important political events in recent history.

  • Every single vote counts.

  • Young people are often (unfairly) maligned as apathetic because we don’t vote in the same numbers as older generations, let’s shut the haters up once and for all.

  • According to the Fawcett Society, there is a ‘gender gap’ when it comes to voting because, according to a recent poll, 2.5% fewer women than men say they are certain to vote. They estimate this equates to around 8 million women who are not having their say. If you don’t vote, you can’t be counted.

  • Women, literally, died so that we would have the right to vote. The election will be held on June 8th. This, fittingly, is the same day that suffragette Emily Wilding Davidson died from injuries she sustained after stepping in front of king George V’s horse at the Epsom Derby on 4th June 1913 to protest the fact that women did not have the right to vote.

  • You might not feel like any of the main political players care about you. You might even be finding this election a bit boring. All the more reason to vote if so, if younger generations stand up to be counted on June 8th then politicians have to start addressing us.

  • If you’re young, you’re more likely to rent as opposed to own your own home. This means you might have fallen off the electoral role because you’ve moved more times than you can count on both hands in your adult life. Why not register again anyway, just in case, to make sure you get a polling card.

  • Every single vote counts. Oh, yeah, we already said that. If you aren't registered you can't vote and, unfortunately, that means your opinion doesn't count.

  • The Debrief x Clio Peppiatt t-shirts are really nice
