We’ve all seen Catfish, yes? It turns out that some people haven’t, actually, and those are the sort of people likely to be duped into thinking that they’re dating the likes of, er, Katy Perry.
Meet Spencer Morrill, who went on Catfish to confess to presenters Nev Schulman and Max Joseph that he was having doubts about dating Katy Perry – who he thought he’d been dating online for SIX YEARS.
Yes, the same woman who’s been married to Russell Brand and also dated John Mayer and Orlando Bloom in that time. Adding an internet lover into that mix may be too much for even the most dedicated dater, surely?
Spencer gushed that he felt an ‘immediate connection’ with ‘Katy’, who he’d said ‘a million I love yous’ to over the years online. Sigh.
He continued: ‘She’s awesome. Katy's funnier than I am, she's smarter than I am. I don't know how many people give her credit for that, but she's very intelligent. Katy's full of life, huge heart.’
Nobody was ever saying that Katy isn’t intelligent or full of life, FYI, Spencer.
He also ‘fessed up to having spent ‘25 per cent’ of his savings on an engagement ring for supposed Katy. We’re hoping that his savings pot was on the small side to start with if that’s true.
Max and Nev did their thing and eventually traced ‘Katy’ to actually be a woman called Harriet from Gloucester. Which would be a bit of a letdown for anyone.
Nev said: ‘We've found the person you've been talking to beyond really any shred of doubt, and you still want to believe the thing that makes you happier. You need to know that you're not talking to Katy Perry.
‘And you, Harriet, need to start thinking about the fact that this is the actual human being. As weird and crazy as he might be, he has a heart and was giving it to you 100 percent for six years of his life. For both of you, there's some self reflection that needs to happen.’
Maybe it’s time for less internetting and more MTV-watching, Spencer.
