Girls in Japan Are Giving Away Period Chocolates For Valentine’s Day

Yes, really

One of the annoying things about Valentine’s Day (other than the obvious) is the tedious array of gifting options.

Unless you’re buying a teddy bear ~ironically~ (which is never really that ironic or funny) then the gifts available to you when buying for a boy are chocolates, flowers and bears. Bears, FFS.

But if you’re in the business of ‘making it your own’ (and you’re not Kirstie Allsopp) then you could always look to an apparent Japanese trend making the rounds this year. Valentine’s Day in Japan is traditionally celebrated by girls giving the male objects of their desire a box of homemade chocolates, a tradition known as *honmei choco – *or 'true feelings chocolate'. So far, so sweet. According to news on Twitter though, it seems that some girls have been adding menstrual blood to their chocolates along with spit and bits of hair, in order to ensure their love is reciprocated. Remember that love spell you may or may not have cast aged 13 to make your bewitch your beloved? Yeah, it's just like that, but really gross.

The Japanese website Naver Matome has posted a series of tweets around the trend. The best bit of this are all the ones detailing how sad they are that their menstrual cycles haven’t synced up to the date. Gross, but still way more interesting than a teddy bear. LOL?
