Sleep is the must-have currency of the digital age.

We're all so busy and buzzing from our hectic, demanding lives that winding down at night can be surprisingly elusive.

Now, a sleep expert has shared her top tips for drifting off at night - and some of them are unexpected, to say the least.

Shea Morrison, founder of Australia-based The Good Night Co, shared her unusual advice with FEMAIL ahead of World Sleep Day this Friday.

Here are just a few of her golden nuggets of wisdom for getting into the mood (for sleep)...

1. Have sex

Not an option for everyone, but Shea believes that a bit of hanky-panky directly before you hit the pillow "can reduce the amount of time it takes to fall asleep and improve overall sleep quality".

2. Ditch your PJs

Being too hot means it's tricky to maintain an optimal core temperature - which in turn, can disrupt the quality of your shut-eye, according to Shea.

"Wearing pyjamas can keep the body from reaching this optimal temperature and lead to overheating during the night," she says.

The upshot? It's probably best to throw your nightwear to the wind.

3. Balance your legs against a wall

This is a sure-fire method for coaxing your body into chill mode, says Shea.

"The legs-up-on-the-wall pose, known as Viparita Karani, helps to calm your nervous system and quieten your mind so it's easier to fall asleep," she explains.

So there you have it, folks. Three tips to try out at home.
