As part of BBC’s Freedom season, it asked four girls from all around the world – Lesotho, Jordan, the UK and Iceland – about their lives. In the four mini videos, the girls, Shoeshoe, Mira, Lulu and Vigdis speak about how their freedom is restricted in various ways, simply because they are girls, explain what is expected of them as they become women, what they would change if they were in charge of their country, and what they think needs to be overcome for gender equality to come about.
The strange thing is, though these girls seem to be from different countries, have different identities and different experiences in life, when it comes to gender, the similarities between each of the girls’ experiences are profound.
And it’s especially interesting to see what each of the girls is doing to combat the sexism they see on a day-to-day basis. We can’t embed the videos here – thanks, BBC – but the videos are really worth checking out. The videos are teasers for a radio documentary, All That Stands In The Way, which will be broadcast on BBC World radio on 22nd March (as in, tomorrow, Saturday).
