Feminist Tinder Is A Thing But No, Not What You're Thinking

Whether or not Tinder is women-friendly remains to be seen. Some people, like Nancy Jo Sales, might argue that Tinder’s created such an endless stream of women that blokes are seeing them as disposable and so losing whatever respect they previously had for them. Others might say that Tinder, at least in the UK, is a reasonable way of giving otherwise shy, stiff-upper-lip types (that’s all of us sometimes, right?) an opportunity to speak to one another from behind the safety of a screen.

Regardless, there’s an Instagram account that sets to aggregate feminists calling out douchebags on Tinder. Filled with screengrabbed exchanges, there’s a lot of pause for thought. Like where a creep says, noting the ‘feminist’ in her bio ‘#bodyposi send me nudes’ (she says ‘Mm how about no’). Or when one guy says ‘do you by chance like sucking cock?’ and she says ‘I don’t like abrupt sexual questioning from strangers’

The feminist responses might seem repetitive and not exactly hilarious, but after a few scrolls, you realise that what is hilarious, is the by rote way some guys think they can appropriately pursue a girl. Like, did you swipe right because you liked this girl? Or did you swipe right because you wanted to ask her if she wants your dick? Are you that insecure?

As well as helping us to realise how rid-dick-ulous some willy-obsessed boys can be on Tinder, the account also has some feminist theory in there. Like, when a guy messages – having had no response before – saying ‘Let me slide this big dick inside u baby’, the girl responds ‘Lol fuck off’. He then replies ‘I still didn’t hear a no lol’. Underneath this screengrabbed exchange, the caption reads: ‘fun fact: rape culture s garbage. Denying its existence perpetuates its existence. If you deny rape culture you are participating in rape culture and you are a garbage human thanks bye.’

And even if you don’t want to get into all of that theory, what’s great about the account is that it provides reams of examples of how to respond to people when they’re dicks on Tinder. Because, as well as blocking someone (imagine if you could do that to creeps in bars) you’ve got plenty of examples to fling at them to explain, succinctly, why you’ve blocked them. Hopefully, they’ll learn how ridiculous they’ve been. Making Tinder –and the world – a better place for all.
