In between all the turkey eating and present unwrapping this Christmas, spare a little thought for those of us who aren't lucky enough to have homes and families to spend the day with.
2015 was the year the refugee crisis hit catastrophic levels as hundreds of thousands of Syrians (and other nationalities) upped sticks and headed west, away from the violence of ISIS and other extremist groups.
Among the horrors that came about this summer (which have by no means stopped), the incident that finally got the world to sit up and take notice was the body of little Alan Kurdi, 3, washing up on a Turkish beach after the boat that was carrying him to Kos sank. His mother Rehanna and brother Galeb, 5, also died in the accident.
This year, Channel 4 have asked Abdullah Kurdi, Alan's father, to present their Alternative Christmas Message. In the past it's been delivered by the British nurse who survuved Ebola and Edward Snowden.
Abdullah's message is clear; he is asking the world to remember the Syrian refugees this Christmas. 'I'd like the whole world to open its doors to Syrians. If a person shuts a door in someone's face, this is very difficult. When a door is opened, they no longer feel humiliated.'
He continues, 'At this time of year I would like to ask you all to think about the pain of fathers, mothers and children who are seeking peace and security.'
Abdullah's focus is on the children, 'I want to help children because they know nothing about life except for laughing and playing. That's all they know. So it's a problem for children if we don't look after them and take care of them.'
He now lives in Iraq and wants to start a charity school and hospital for Syrian Kurds.
