Fabric is Reopening with Strict New Provisions

Islington Council has announced that it has reached a settlement with Fabric allowing it to reopen. The agreement comes after the nightclub's license was revoked on 6 September, following two drug-related deaths and a 'culture of drug use' which 'security and existing management appeared incapable of controlling'.

The council and Fabric issued a joint statementyesterday detailing the plans to make the nightclub safer for clubbers and reinforced its 'Zero Tolerance' approach to drugs. However, the statement also included a list of updated conditions that must be met by Fabric before it can reopen, which includes ID scanning on entry, enhanced searching procedures and lifetime bans for anyone caught taking or purchasing drugs.

In the statement, Islington Council said: '(The Authority) is now satisfied that Fabric's directors and senior management understand precisely what has to be done to ensure that Fabric is a safe environment for young clubbers.

'Fabric understands and accepts that the additional conditions it has agreed to are meaningless unless its operational practices ensure each of them is complied with. Fabric will not reopen until they believe that they comply with their new conditions.'

In a post on Sadiq Khan's Facebook page last night, the London Mayor said: 'I'm delighted that (an) agreement has been reached and that Fabric will now reopen. We needed to find a commonsense solution that protects both the future of Fabric and the safety of all clubbers - and we have.

'The issues faced by Fabric point to a wider problem of how we protect London's night-time economy... Over the past eight years, London has lost 50% of its nightclubs and 40% of its live music venues. This decline must stop if London is to retain its status as a 24-hour city with a world class night life.'
