'Put me on a pedestal and I'll only disappoint you!' protests one of the tracks on Australian singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett's breakthrough debut 'Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit.' And playing the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury - ahead of Kanye West no less - is a pretty high pedestal.
The 27-year-old was sheepish when we chatted as she warmed up for her Saturday stint. So would she disappoint us? "It depends how you define it. I just think performing for so many people is gonna be fun, y'know? " Of course she didn't once she hit the stage and played a blazing set.
Winning herself the 'Lena Dunham of music' buzz, she plays the self-deprecating card on anxiety-fuelled DIY anthems about self-consciousness and overwhelming nature of the world, but Courtney doesn't sound worried about her fleeting one day trip to Worthy Farm - apart from missing out on Patti Smith. "It's a shame, but I'll just have to catch her another time." Like us, it's the heritage of Glastonbury that she appreciates. "So many people make it their yearly adventure,” she says. “It's been around for a long time and everyone falls in love with it. Everyone connects."
