England Women Provide Our Closest Chance To Winning World Cup Since 1990

The football World Cup is upon us, not that you’d know from the distinct lack of memorabilia and souvenirs in Tesco. That’s because it’s the women’s World Cup.

The Lionesses aren’t doing too shabbily at all, though, having just beat Canada – the host team – 2-1 to propel themselves into the semi-finals. FYI, the English men’s football team haven’t reached a semi-final since 1990 – when they lost to West Germany (yes, it’s that long ago) on penalties.

England’s two goals were scored early on in the game – which took place in the early hours of Saturday morning - at 11 and 14 minutes respectively.

Jodie Taylor got the first goal and Lucy Bronze got the second, and the defence only let in one goal, from Christine Sinclair, three minutes before half time. Which, meant that, by the final whistle, England won and are now through to the semi-finals. They've not only broken their own records but could go on to win the World Cup.

As David Beckham put it as he posted a photo of the girls in a huddle to his Instagram page: ‘Girls what a performance.. We are so proud of what you have achieved and the passion you have shown gives us so much pride… Our lionesses roar into the semi’s [union jack emoji] @england’

It shouldn’t matter – we should support women’s sport even if the women didn’t do as well as the men. But considering the women’s team are doing so well, it’s an extra sign that, next time the women’s World Cup is hosted, maybe in a country with less of an antisocial time difference, it will deserve a lot more hype than it’s getting right now…

Well done, the Lionesses!
