Every year the Unicode update brings us more and more emojis we never knew we needed, like the spiky puffer fish, a Japanese ogre and multiple train emojis (who needs that many different types of train?). Thankfully, The Unicode Consortium have answered our prayers and put forward their 38 candidates for the Unicode 9 update, because we 100% NEED the avocado and cucumber emojis.
Designed by graphic designer Joshua M Jones, they’ve also created a pregnant woman, a dancing man (who looks a little bit Saturday Night Fever), a face palm face and the long-awaited selfie pose. Santa has been reunited with ‘Mother Christmas’, and we’ve finally got a nauseated face to accurately describe what we feel like the morning after a few too many clinking glasses emoji.
Here are our top five new emojis from the new candidates. Who needs words?
Nauseated face
We’ve always needed an emoji to accurately represent how we feel after a night out, when we’re too hungover for an ‘OMG I’M WITHERING AWAY INSIDE’ SnapChat. Nauseated face, you get us.
Selfie
Honestly, why hasn’t this been added sooner? It’s just so necessary. We really need this one.
Avocado
OK, seriously, if you’re not excited about this one we think you’re seriously missing out on a culinary delight. Everyone LOVES avocados. If you don’t, we’re worried about you.
Face Palm
When someone just says something so stupid you literally can't think of an answer, face palm is your best friend.
Croissant
The perfect emoji to signify that you want a fancy French brunch and you want it now.
We’re also giving a shout out to the dancing man. He looks like he's having a good time.
Hopefully they’ll all make the grade for next year’s update, because now that we’ve seen them, we need them.
