With most of the U.S East Coast covered in a fluffy carpet of snow, it’s tough to get out and about on the streets of Washington DC. New York City seems to have emerged through the worst of it (although it is still a bit nippy), with most of the slushy gridlock shifted by Sunday morning. New Yorkers are still in the process of digging out their buried cars and rebooting the power supply to their homes as the Big Apple recovers from the second-biggest snowstorm on record.
Washington D.C, on the other hand, isn’t fairing too well. A traffic ban is still in effect and most public schools and local government offices in Washington are still closed. But someone’s still gotta run the country, right?
On Tuesday morning, politicians braved the biblical-style weather to make it to Capitol Hill where, along with the House of Representatives, the U.S senate debate and discuss the country’s legislature. Well, some of them did. Pretty much all members of staff that managed to make it to the Capitol building were female (ofc).
Civil servants, floor managers, parliamentary assistants - all WOMEN.
Alaskan Republican, Lisa Murkowski noticed the all-female crew that literally battled through a shit storm to get to work as opposed to their - clearly much less hardcore - male colleagues.
‘As we convene this morning’, she said as she addressed the half-empty chamber, ‘you look around the chamber, the presiding officer is female. All of our parliamentarians are female. Our floor managers are female. All of our pages are female.’
Senator Murkowski then pondered why female parliamentarians were able to brave the arctic conditions whereas men chose to sit in bed, in their boxers, accompanied by a couple of bags of Cheetos (probably).
‘Perhaps it speaks to the hardiness of women’, she said, ‘that put on your boots and put your hat on and get out and slog through the mess that’s out there’.
Beyoncé called it. Who run the world?
