Yesterday we saw national pizza day being celebrated across the world (YAS PIZZA) and there is no doubt that quite a few of the pizza lovers out there treated themselves to their favourite Domino’s choice – even if it meant busting out a small bundle of cash to buy.
However, you might be left spitting out that left-over bit of stuffed crust and cursing at your local delivery man when you find out what they pay for Dominos in Australia and New Zealand…
That is because a basic large margherita or pepperoni pizza, that costs around £14.99 or £16.99 in the UK, will only set you back a mere £2.87 each in New Zealand (!!!)
That price is cheaper than a flat white from Pret, cheaper than a Tesco meal deal, and only 87p more expensive that a large TEA from Greggs. All that for a meal that will fill you up for your dinner AND possibly your lunch.
Australia is similarly cheap with it only being slightly (17p to be exact) more expensive at £3.04. People have reacted to this news by sharing that it is actually more expensive to buy fruit and veg in Australia than it is to buy a Domino’s pizza…
(If only we had that same situation here and could help aid our woes over the vegetable crisis)
To add to this, if, like most people, you like to indulge in a few toppings or fancy combos on top of your pizza pie, you will only be set back £6.89 in New Zealand for a Veg-E-Roma or a Mighty Meaty and not much more in Australia at £7.88.
In the USA they don’t have as good a deal as the Australian and New Zealanders, but their pizzas are still a few pounds cheaper than we have to pay.
Why do we have to pay so much for Domino’s when our pals around the world get it so cheap?
A spokesperson from Dominos explained the staggering difference as differentiation of food, petrol, rent and labour prices in different countries.
Hmmm.... but, in 2011 it was revealed that a margherita pizza costs only £1.25 for Dominos to make, which allowed them a 900% profit on them. Yes, they still have to pay VAT and generally make a good profit, but it does seem like there is some room there to be taking the piss out of customers.
I can get a freshly baked, authentic and highly delicious pizza for only £7 at my local Italian pizza joint. All of that added to a restaurant feel if I want to sit in. So why is Domino’s making it so difficult for pizza lovers in the UK to be able to afford it?
The one saving grace in this whole debacle is that, although I am wildly jealous of the Australian and New Zealanders paying literally nothing compared to us, apparently they don't have Domino's dips….
