Being a music PR to some of the most influential bands in the world like Radiohead sounds like a bit of a dream job doesn’t it? Well, for 27-year-old Sarah Henderson that IS her job, we’re not jealous or anything (we really are). Sarah is director at Murray Chalmers PR (MCPR) and deals with the likes of Noel Gallagher, Radiohead, Kylie Minogue, Paloma Faith and tons more. This is what goes down in her daily life…
This is me on shoot with Blossoms, no day is ever dull at Murray Chalmers that’s for sure. I was 16 when i did work experience with Murray at Parlophone Records and at the end of the week he told me: ‘when you’ve got a degree come back and I’ll give you a job.” I never forgot, and got in touch at the end of my degree at London College of Fashion. I went back to do another weeks work experience for Murray Chalmers PR and the rest is history!
Here I am outside our London offices. I’m very proud to work and be part of the development of such an exciting company. Working with new music talent is such a big motivation, we really believe in them all. To work with an artist before they’re signed and then alongside them as they grow is a real pleasure.
This is the team at a recent event we did the press for, Brixton Beach Boulevard. No day is the same at MCPR, you could be on shoot with a band, pitching for a new business, working with the team on devising press strategies or going to an event after work. It can be stressful, but it’s never ever boring.
I’m just in a meeting with Jack, a publicist on the team (we’re definitely not posing for this one…). For anyone looking for a job in PR I’d advise then to intern while at University, read the papers, blogs, basically just read, go to lots of gigs and remember everyone starts somewhere and possibly not for a lot of money, but your time and dedication will pay off!
This is with Harriet from The Guardian just before Radiohead. I often have to go to a gig in the evening but it’s not a bad thing when we have such amazing clients. Music is a really sociable thing and it’s at these gigs that I often catch up with journalists and friends.
With the man himself, Murray, in Soho after a meeting. Since starting at MCPR I’ve taken a year out to to Australia after my husband was offered a job there. Murray kindly said i could take a sabbatical and come back. When in Melbourne I continued my PR career and then since coming back to the UK I set up the Brands & Events division, became General Manager and more recently I became a Director of the business.
At my not always tidy desk. I usually do 10-6 but i’m on my emails pretty much 24/7. My standard day will involve setting my alarm with the intention of doing yoga in my living room, before snoozing until 8.15am and having to quickly get ready. No day is the same and I love every minute of it.
