Davina McCall is a self-proclaimed work in progress. A staple on our TV screens for over three decades, the presenter has carved out a sensational career which has seen her at the helm of Big Brother, judge on The Masked Singer and help reunite relatives after a long spell of separation on Long Lost Family.

But Davina, 55, is not just known for brilliance in front of the camera. She also dedicates her time to encouraging conversation around menopause, sharing workout tips and, in the process, inspiring her 1.6m followers with her positive attitude.

When we catch up with the TV diamond, her zest for life is just as prominent as we expected. But we learn that her confidence is something that has come with age, particularly when it comes to body image and keeping the inner critic at bay. She may think she's a work in progress, but we can confirm the groundwork has been done.

You have partnered up with JD Williams for their Valentine’s Day Campaign - what message do you hope it sends out about body confidence?

The state of my underwear is definitely a good indicator of where my head is at! But even if I’m shattered or feeling out of sorts, a nice matching set of underwear makes me feel better. Valentine’s Day isn’t just for couples, it’s an opportunity for all of us to celebrate loving ourselves. Underwear is the thing that not many people get to see, so it’s easy to think, 'What’s the point? How important can it be?' But you are the point! We all know that confidence is the key to attraction - not size or shape. Confidence is hugely sexy, and underwear has the power to make you feel confident. If you know that you have got boss bitch undies on… you are going to be oozing self-confidence!

How have your views towards body image changed over the years?

I have totally changed my perception of my body since I was in my 20s. I was super self-critical back in those days - it makes me sad to think about it. But now, I’m in awe of my body and what it’s done for me. It’s grown babies, it’s done lots of dancing and exercise. Without a doubt, feeling strong has had an impact on how I feel about my body now. I didn’t have that in my 20s.

What do you think are the key components of developing body confidence?

I believe age helps us all relax a bit and that inner critic is a bit quieter. I think being a signed-up member of the ‘zero fucks club’ also helps! If you care less what people think, you are more likely to wear something that says ‘I’m here' - that’s a sign of confidence. Exercise has been a game-changer for me. I started in my mid-30s properly, and it really changed the way I perceived myself. It helped bring me back to life. I went invisible. I just wanted to disappear - I don’t anymore.

What helps you feel confident and liberated?

Lingerie is the most important part of any outfit for me. I’ve revolutionised all of my friend’s lingerie drawers. Being menopausal has been a fantastic transition for me - very hard at the beginning - but once I discovered a way through, it has been fantastically liberating.

What would be your advice to women who feel body conscious?

If you feel body conscious, firstly ask yourself, 'why? What is the barrier'? Then ask yourself what you are going to do about that. How can you make those changes? Is it your off-white, no-matching underwear? Change it! Is it your sugar cravings that make you binge in the evening? Stop! Change it. Are you peri-menopausal? Don’t soldier on. Do something about it! You have the power to change the trajectory of your life.

What are some positive habits you can adopt to boost self-esteem?

This is a hard one because everyone has different critics in their head. I would say the first step is to list all the things that you don't like about yourself and write down why. There is something about seeing that you aren’t perfect and that these behaviours are ones you don’t like. They probably won't go away but if you are aware of them and act accordingly, then you will like yourself more. Self-esteem is an inside job. Do mini random acts of kindness. Help people when they need it. Call a mate who is down - be a good friend. These will all make you feel good about yourself.

Do you think society’s attitude to age and sexiness is starting to shift?

Totally! Carol Vorderman is my inspiration on this front. She is so empowered right now - it’s gorgeous to see. Midlifers are way more liberated than in previous generations.

You love working out regularly - is it ever tough to motivate yourself? And what are the top benefits for you?

I love getting fit, but like everyone else I massively struggle with motivation. That’s why we put six-week challenges on ownyourgoalsdavina.com so you have a timetable to complete. It's so motivating! I love, at my age, feeling strong. I love feeling like I want to walk up the escalator in the tube. I love having lots of energy. Exercise will keep me fit, well and alive for longer!

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

My Dad told me love is made up of four things: friendship, carnal love, respect and trust. Without all four, love will disappear.

And finally - any advice that you would give your younger self?

It’s all going to be okay.
