Anyone who's ever negotiated the office drinks round will know that people can be rather particular about their tea.

Some believe that adding milk before water is a heinous crime.

Others insist the tea bag should be left IN the cup for a stellar brew.

Suffice to say, crafting the perfect cuppa is a question of heated opinion and debate.

And now, something has happened to make this beloved British past-time even more controversial.

One of the UK's leading tea experts (yes, that's a job) has unveiled a holy grail of brewing: and it's a bit of a curveball, to say the least.

William Gorman, chairman of the Tea and Infusions Association, says that one must never boil the same water twice when making a cuppa.

William tells the Telegraph that boiling the same water twice or more removes oxygen and nitrogen, resulting in a "dull" cup of tea.

"Usually when people's tea goes cold they reboil the kettle and make another cup," he says. "But doing this you are guaranteed to give yourself a dull cup of tea. You need freshly drawn water for a good cup because reboiling it takes out all the oxygen and nitrogen out of it."

Frankly, this news has rocked our humble world of tea-making.

And, in an even more startling development, William recommends using a microwave to re-heat your beverage.

"A better solution is to put it in the microwave for 15 to 20 seconds," he says. "When you microwave tea all you're doing is from a scientific point of view is just moving the molecules around and getting it back up to a decent temperature. It is not impacting the flavour at all."

We'll never look at tea in the same way again...
