Just as certain habits breed success in the workplace, others do the opposite.

In a new article for Business Insider, writer Áine Cain dissects the behavioural patterns that can negatively impact our performance at work - either because they cause other people to view us in a poor light, or because they're reflective of wider life problems.

Amid these factors, the way that we interact with those around us is shown to be a key influencer.

Whether in formal meetings or tea round chats, it's easy for our reputation to take a hit as a result of common yet sloppy conversational habits.

Alongside the obvious culprits such as gossiping, these can be just as affected by things like not speaking out when the time is ripe for it.

Here are three talking habits to avoid, in order to get ahead:

Keeping quiet

"You keep your head down. You don't speak out. You don't get out of line," writes Cain.

"Your aversion to putting yourself out there professionally may seem like a good protective measure, but it's holding you back... if you're just psyching yourself out, you've fallen into a terrible habit."

Blurting things out

"It's important to be authentic. That doesn't mean you should be spouting off without thinking, though," says Cain.

"Don't be the person that blurts out whatever's on your mind. It's an annoying habit that can make you seem rude, awkward, and uninformed."

Moaning

"Everyone has gripes," writes Cain. "Just don't be the person who never stops grumbling about trivial matters."
