The prospect of solo travel can be a daunting one, but it's arguably an experience that everyone should try at least once. From the freedom to explore a city on your own terms (and your own time schedule) to the chance to meet new people, the benefits of leaving your comfort zone are manifold.

To provide inspiration for your next venture, Airbnb have compiled a list of the destinations that are trending for solo travellers, fast rising in popularity for one-person bookings. Update your must-visit list accordingly...

10. Busan, South Korea

South of Seoul is Busan, South Korea's second city, which has seen a 103 percent increase in solo travel searches since last year. Set on the coast with the urban skyline punctuated with mountains, it has a landscape unlike any other. Visit in spring to catch cherry blossom season.

9. Charlotte, North Carolina, USA

Admit it: you'd have never considered a trip to North Carolina's main city. According to Airbnb, though, solo trips are up by 106 percent.

Mexico's capital has undergone something of a cultural renaissance in recent years: it's now known for a flourishing food scene (the Roma Norte neighbourhood is hotly tipped) and its striking mix of modern and old colonial architecture.

7. Auckland, New Zealand

Auckland is clearly worth the long haul flight. Its mix of rolling hills and surf beaches has caused a 114 leap in solo Airbnb bookings over the past year.

6. Sao Paulo, Brazil

Sao Paolo is dizzying in size and scope, meaning that there's plenty for a solo traveller to digest. It may lack the 'beach on your doorstep' vibe of Rio de Janiero, but up the coast you'll find the North Shore, home to some of Brazil's most inviting beaches.

5. Johannesburg, South Africa

Often overlooked as a destination in favour of Cape Town, it seems that solo travellers are finally giving Jo'burg the attention it deserves: bookings increased by 135 percent in South Africa's biggest and buzziest city.

4. Playa del Carmen, Mexico
