WhatsApp has FINALLY added a GIF feature within the new update – hallelujah! Over 1 billion people use the messaging app, so why it has taken so long to join the GIF game I do not know – but I am welcoming it with open arms.
Shocked? Send an OMG cat. Upset? Send a crying Pikachu. Annoyed? Send a Regina George eye roll. You don’t need to say a single word, which is how conversations work these days right? The update allows you to access a library of emotions, send and receive GIFs, send videos of 6 seconds or less as a GIF and (arguably the best feature) send your own live videos as GIFs. Since Apple added the live photo feature, it has been a waiting game of which apps will start to cater to them and WhatsApp seems to have won the race.
To access the GIFs, you will need to have an iPhone 6s or 7 - sorry Android users, your time will come. The library is quite hidden within the app, you press the ‘+’ button and choose photo and the bottom left will say GIF, here you can search and save your favourite ones. To send your own video/image as a GIF, choose your media as usual and a small toggle will let you preview it as a GIF or in its original state, choose your format and send. Since the update is only for IOS, only iPhone users can receive and view GIFs for the time being.
So take ten minutes out, download the new update and search for ‘Harry Potter’ in the GIF album – you won’t be disappointed.
