You don't have to have spent a hungover afternoon watching back-to-back episodes of Nothing To Declare to know that Australian authorities are very stringent about what they let into their country. That's why it seems extra silly that a 22-year-old British woman has been caught allegedly smuggling 1.6 litres of liquid cocaine into the country inside that most perennial of student status symbols, the lava lamp.

Things get weirder, too: she was on a cruise ship, not really the type of place you'd expect a young whippersnapper to spend a jaunt. The ship had just come in to Sydney from New Caledonia, a Pacific Island. When the woman was searched by customs officials, initial tests on the lava lamp's 'lava' proved positive for liquid cocaine, and the customs dog agreed this (two barks yes, one bark no?)

The Australian police then charged the woman for importing a marketable quantity of a border-controlled drug, according to Australia's Associated Press.

Further tests are going to be done to find out how pure and dense the cocaine content of the liquid is, and if the woman is found guilty, she could be imprisoned for up to 25 years and given a fine of up to $850,000 (£456,000). Strewth.
