This Story About A Woman Who Asked Guests To Pay Over £1,000 To Attend Her Wedding Is Going Viral

We don’t like the term bridezilla because it’s a demeaning stereotype used for women who are going through the stressful and costly experience of planning a wedding, and we think we need to do away with the horrible, sexist trope of the demanding, selfish bride altogether.

Unfortunately, it is the word that immediately springs to mind as we read the story of the woman who tried to make her guests pay over £1000 each to attend her dream wedding - and cancelled it when they wouldn’t pay.

The bride-to-be told the whole story in a private Facebook group, and thanks to screenshots shared by Twitter user @0lspicykeychain (yes that's really her username) people have been reading and reacting to the epic tale on social media over the past few days.

Let’s start at the beginning shall we?

The bride and groom to be met at 14, got engaged at 18 and had their first baby at 20. They managed to save $15,000 (£12,000) for a wedding and started looking at venues. All good so far. But when the pair were torn between two venue options, they consulted a local psychic told them to go with the more expensive option. ‘And we thought why the hell not? We just needed a little push.’

This new wedding plan in Aruba would cost $60,000 (£46,000), ‘all we asked was a little help from our friends and family. How could we have OUR wedding that We dreamed of without proper funding?’

How indeed.

The couple asked each guest for $1,500 (£1,000), the maid of honour pledged $5,000 (£3,9000), the groom’s family offered $3,000 (£2,300). ‘We made it clear, if you can’t contribute, you weren’t invited to our exclusive wedding. It’s a once in a lifetime party.’

Needless to say, after sending out invites, only eight people RSVP’d with the cheque. They even set up a Go Fund Me – but this only made them $250 (£190). ‘Desperately, we resent our invites and asked people to donate what they could. I mean seriously people, what is $1,000? What is $1,500? Clearly, not a lot. It would be quite manageable and within budget. I’ve heard of people asking for worse [...] I just wanted to be a Kardashian for a day and then live my life like normal.'

The groom suggested a Vegas wedding, but that was shot down quickly. The maid of honour suggested she was asking for too much, and the bridesmaids requested their deposits back – which the bride found to be an unacceptable request; ‘I refuse to give it back to until they can pay me back for their emotional distress.’

And so the wedding was cancelled four days before it was due to take place, and the bride-to-be broke up with her fiancé and cut off all her friends.
