We’e all familiar with the story of Brendan Dassey, the man whose case was profiled alongside his Uncle, Steven Dassey in the Netflix series, Making A Murderer. But if you’re not, let us refresh your memory.

Now 27. Brendan Dassey was 16 when he was catapulted into the middle of the murder investigation of photographer Teresa Haibach in 2005. He was convicted, alongside his Uncle for first-degree intentional homicide, second-degree sexual assault and mutilating a corpse, and sentenced to life in prison in 2007. But on Monday, the news that Dassey’s release was ordered by US Magistrate Judge Williams Duffin started to trend.

Back in August the court ruled Brendan’s confession to help his uncle Steven Avery to commit rape and murder as a violation of his rights, with Duffin arguing that: ‘Dassey’s borderline to below average intellectual ability likely made him more susceptible to coercive pressures than a peer of higher intellect.’ The ruling read that the authorities have ‘failed to demonstrate that Dassey represents a present danger to the community.’ He will be released from prison under supervision, and must submit to the probation office by midday today with the address where he plans to live.

Dassey will also have to abide by other conditions, such as reporting to a probation officer, not owning a gun or other weapon, seeking approval before moving and being available for home visits. It is currently unknown when Dassey will be released.
