There’s no denying money is tight for a lot of students at uni – the gap between student loan payments can seem to last whole terms, not months, and you discover just how far one pack of cereal can last.

One group of students has been enjoying a very different uni experience, after selling £800,000 worth of drugs on the dark web.

Trips to Jamaica and Amsterdam didn’t even dent the proceeds from their illegal business, and some were able to pay off their student loans and buy property in Manchester, according to The Guardian.

The group of five started off selling to students, then moved online with people buying from across the world using online marketplace Silk Road - they even became ‘drug dealer of the year’ on the black market site.

During the trial Manchester crown court heard that a picture of a flask with Walter White on it was found on one of the student’s phones, apparently Netflix show Breaking Bad was a running joke between the group. Well, they did study pharmacology, computer science, petrochemical engineering, geology and marketing between them.

The students were caught when the FBI shut down Silk Road in October 2013, and found laptops, cash and drugs at the Manchester flat the men were living in. They have now been sentenced to up to 15 years each in prison.

The judge Michael Leeming had this to say:

‘As intelligent men, you will each appreciate the misery that is caused and contributed to by people like you,’ he said. ‘My duty is threefold: firstly, to protect the public from people like you. Second, to punish you, and third, to deter those who may be similarly minded to act this way in the future.’

‘These offences are so serious that only immediate custody and sentences of some length can be considered.’

Who can forget Tommy, Chuckie, Lil & Phil (and Dil)? The Nickelodeon show already had four seasons, three movies and a spin-off, and in 2018 it was revealed another series was in the works. Until then, I'm just going to sit munching on my Reptar Bar and rewatch episodes on Amazon Prime.
