A unique treatment centre in Australia is among one of the world's first to pioneer a spa-based approach to mental health.
Terri Bowman, creator of the Brain Wellness Spa in Perth, believes those suffering from issues such as anger, depression and burnout shouldn't have to pay for expensive therapy to get the help they need.
Her spa offers alternative therapies that "get away from that typical, clinical approach to mental health".
"We deal with hard stuff but we have a relaxing and supportive environment where people feel safe," Terri, who has worked to help people with mental health problems for the past decade, tells the Daily Mail.
Terri was motivated to set up her own clinic after suffering a psychotic episode of her own, aged 45.
She was diagnosed with menstrual psychosis, "a rare condition triggered by a late menstrual cycle that was a side-effect of the IVF drugs that I had taken for many years whilst trying to fall pregnant".
Doctors prescribed her with lots of different medication, which ultimately left her anxious and depressed.
The experience inspired her to launch The Brain Wellness Spa, which revolves around Quantum Neuro Recoding' treatment - a method she has invented that reprogrammes the brain via the unconscious, and "stops your brain from going down the pathway of a bad memory or behaviour".
The main goal, she says, is to teach clients how to be happy again by "taking your brain out on a date".
Terri believes her "soft" approach to treating mental health issues can potentially be more effective than traditional clinical methods, because the process is more caring and less intense.
"When you go into a psychiatrist, if the environment is not nurturing and supportive, the brain can trigger stress responses that can make you feel worse than you were before," she says.
The Brain Wellness Spa in Perth is one of a handful of emerging centres that aim to provide "cognitive rehab". At the Sha Wellness Clinic in Spain, programmes bring together the indulgence of luxury spa treatments with neurological assessments and detox nutrition plans.
Courses tackle everything from burnout to troubled sleep and exhaustion.
The newly-launched Mental Makeover Retreat near Lake Como in Italy promises to combat anxiety and brain fog, among other issues.
Leading the course, coach Steve McKeown says the centre "will not only be extremely relaxing and fun but will enable you to regain control of your cognition, challenge your assumptions and rid you of those limitations that have held you back in your life".
While some critics will remain sceptical of the effectiveness of such an approach, it's an interesting new option as our dialogue and understanding around mental health problems continues to develop.
