Over wonder what your opening gambit should be on a dating app? We all know that dick pics and awful puns relating to genitalia are a no-go (just check out Tinder Nightmares for more examples of what not to do). But which opening lines are proven to actually work?

Buzzfeed News published research from Hinge, a dating app similar to Tinder (but based on your Facebook friend group) that tested out 100 pre-written lines on users, ranging from slightly off-beat and quirky lines to straightforward, to-the-point questions.

And while most people tend to use generic messages to start a conversation "Hi how are you?" and "how's your week going?" - thes eare the opening lines that actually work (and the ones that don't). NB - Men were noted as more likely to respond to assertive messages, while women were more likely to respond to messages that involved food.

**Most Effective Opening Lines On Dating Apps:

**

  1. Two truths and a lie; ready. set. go!

  2. Sunday priorities: exercise, sleep, or aggressive mimosas?

  3. Better discovery: Netflix or avocados?

  4. Katy Perry or Taylor Swift?

  5. Breakfast preference: pancakes, waffles, or sleeping til lunch?

The answer to number 2 is clearly aggressive mimosas, every time.

Most Ineffective Opening Lines On Dating Apps:

  1. Would you rather have weekly hiccups or never sneeze to completion ever again?

  2. What’s the most awkward movie you’ve watched with your parents?

  3. Worst piece of advice you ever received?

  4. Jorts… or cargo jorts?

  5. Settle this once and for all: are they called fireflies or lightning bugs?

To be fair, we enjoyed the 'jorts' question - but the others are a bit awkward for an introduction. Now all we want to know is - how effective is a Joey Tribbiani style "How You Doin'"?
