While you may think that bagging your dream job is all about the hours you spend crafting the perfect CV and covering letter, it appears there is another factor that could be affecting your chances.

New research from Job Today has identified that there is an optimum time to hit send on your job application, and it’s 9am on a Wednesday.

How did they discover this? Well, they looked at both when the majority of job adverts were posted, and how quickly employers responded to the subsequent applications. They found that 17% of employers post jobs on a Wednesday, and 47% of job applicants are invited for an interview within 24 hours of sending their application.

Researchers also noted that 1pm is the peak time for job seekers to be searching for new positions so to maximise your chances of success it’s best to get in there as early as possible.

“I would always recommend being enthusiastic and start early in the day to look for a role. Our insight shows that by lunchtime on Wednesday employers will start to receive a flurry of applications so get in there first and get noticed,” Polina Montano, co-founder of Job Today, commented.

When it comes to the application itself, remember to avoid ‘me-focused’ sentences in your covering letter, and think instead about what you can contribute to the company, not what they will offer you.
