Super Bowl Sunday is HUGE. Even if you’re not an American football fan, it is massive! And there’s loads to love; hot men running round in tight outfits, the amazing adverts, oh, and KATY PERRY. The California Girl is this year’s half-time performer and has promised to deliver an amazing show.
If Katy’s tours are anything to go by we can expect crazy props, more than a few costume changes and an incredible, probably gravity-defying, entrance.
But how is she going to top the Super Bowl’s other major moments? From lyric botches and Ferris Bueller to nipples and blackouts, here are some of our favourites from throughout the years…
1. Janet Jackson’s "Wardrobe Malfunction"
The most famous Super Bowl moment of all time – on or off the football field – is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. That’s right people; the phrase "wardrobe malfunction" has been with us for a full decade.
On February 1st 2004, millions of Super Bowl viewers across the world watched in shock as Justin Timberlake removed a piece of Janet Jackson's top, exposing one of her boobs with a star-shaped ring around the nipple during their half-time show. Both artists insisted it was an accident, and coined the famous term, but they were fined $550,000. Organisers played it safe the next year by hiring good old reliable Paul McCartney (who luckily kept all his clothes on).
2. Madonna, Nicki Minaj and M.I.A
Madonna, Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. almost managed to top nipple-gate with their controversial performance in 2012. It started off well with roman soldiers and cheerleaders, complete with cool Givenchy Haute Couture costumes, then M.I.A put her foot (or finger) in it by flipping off the cameras. The rapper is currently fighting a $1.5 million fine for the gesture.
The singer looked incredible in a plunging leather bodysuit, fishnet tights and high heeled ankle boots as she stormed through 14 minutes of her greatest hits such as Love on Top, Crazy in Love and Single Ladies. There was even a Destiny’s Child reunion when both Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams flew in from under the stage!
Although she sang incredibly, instead of the line: "O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming," the singer went for: "What so proudly we watched at the twilight's last gleaming." Unfortunately for Xtina the Super Bowl has over 100 million viewers, so the mistake didn’t go unnoticed.
5. Commercials
One of the best parts of the Super Bowl is the epic adverts (or commercials, if you are from across the pond) that companies spend millions of dollars making. Here are some of our favourites:
Matthew Broderick reprising his role as Ferris Bueller for Honda, more than 25 years after the movie was filmed.
A master class in genius advertising from Tobasco: no words, two characters, plenty of power.
Megan Fox in this ad for Motorola i.e when the world discovered that she uses a hand model! The actress apparently thinks hers are misshapen.
Superbowl XLIX will take place on Sunday, February 1st 2015
