He basically made Sherlock Holmes, and Alan Turing in The Imitation Game of course, now revelations that Benedict Cumberbatch could play David Bowie have got us extremely overexcited, and that’s an understatement. BC as super glam rocker Ziggy Stardust is definitely something we could get on board with.
The Sherlock actor’s reportedly being considered to play the music legend in the delayed film about Freddie Mercury's life, Under Pressure, according to leaked Sony emails. BC has expressed a desire to play the musician before; describing it as his dream role. Asked the character he’d most like to play he didn’t hesitate in saying ‘David Bowie,’ so we can see this, like, really actually happening.
The expectant father-to-be has spoken in the past about Bowie being a real life fan of his, particularly in Sherlock, so the pair could definitely hang out for ‘research’ purposes before, of course, developing a full on bromance, taking selfies, holidaying together etc. etc.
‘Spielberg loves it [Sherlock]. Danny Boyle loves it. I found out David Bowie likes it today. He’s obsessed with it. That is f***ing cool,’ he gushed.
The Freddie Mercury biopic has been stop start for yonks and, until the news that Cumberbatch wants in, the only recent update was that Sacha Baron Cohen had not signed on to write, produce, direct, and star in the film. His loss right?
Now according to more leaked Sony emails - made public by WikiLeaks last week – Benedict’s keen to be Bowie. Hurrah.
Former CEO of Sony Films, Amy Pascal, said in an email to actor Tracey Jacobs (and a partner at the United Talent Agency) 'Benedict loved you. He’d be right for Cleopatra and god knows what else.
'He mentioned something about Bowie.’
So could we be seeing Benedict as Bowie on the big screen super soon? We certainly hope so.
