President Barack Obama, he who is about to leave the most powerful office in the land, has written an essay. About feminism.
It's not that surprising. After all he is a father of two girls but still, it's nice to hear guys call themselves feminists, especially when that guy is the President of the United States. “And I say that not just as President but also as a feminist.' He writes.
He continues; 'The most important people in my life have always been women. I was raised by a single mom, (...)I watched as my grandmother, who helped raise me, worked her way up at a bank only to hit a glass ceiling. I’ve seen how Michelle has balanced the demands of a busy career and raising a family.'
In his essay, President Obama talks about real life. He admits to things he didn’t do perfectly or should’ve done better. 'I can look back now and see that, while I helped out (with raising kids and homework), it was usually on my schedule and on my terms. The burden disproportionately and unfairly fell on Michelle.'
He also points out that there has been a big change in how we now treat women as compared to when our grandmothers were young, BUT, he says, there is still a long way ago. There is, he says 'enormous pressure girls are under to look and behave and even think a certain way.'
Even better, he says men have just as much responsibility to help women in the fight for equality. 'It is absolutely men’s responsibility to fight sexism too. And as spouses and partners and boyfriends, we need to work hard and be deliberate about creating truly equal relationships.'
'That’s what twenty-first century feminism is about: the idea that when everybody is equal, we are all more free.'
Never leave Barack.
