Barack Obama is basically the world’s favourite ex. It ended on good terms, the relationship had just run its course and it was time for everyone involved to go their separate ways.
And yet, as with all exes, you know you shouldn’t keep checking up on what they’re doing, you know it’s not going to help you move on, you know you need to stop dwelling on it but you just can’t help yourself.
A few clicks, a couple of swipes, a quick tap and there it is: Obama’s wonderful life without you. While the world is still trying to cope with the fact that Donald Trump is now the Leader of the Free World, Barack Obama is taking a serious of vacations on which he seems to be having a billboard time, only further compounding our loss.
People aren’t taking it well…
The former president has chilled in Palm Springs, played a few rounds of gold and hung out with Richard Branson in his private paradise, Necker Island wearing a perfectly perched backwards cap.
And now, as if it wasn’t all too much already, the former president has beenpictured kitesurfing and grinning ear to ear on Moskito Island in the British Virgin Islands. You see how happy he is, your heart sinks. You don’t begrudge his new found happiness, after all, being the 44th president of the United States was bloody hard work. He really did give your relationship his all; he put in the time, the effort and he never lost his rag, even when things got tough.
You remember the good times, and manage to raise a half smile. The time he cried when Aretha Franklin sang Natural Woman, his friendship with Joe Biden, the ‘yes we did’ moments, Obamacare, same sex marriage…the list goes on.
There’s comes a point in any break up when you have to stop scrolling. You can’t keep replaying the highlights reel over and over in your mind, it’s time to move on and focus on the future. If it’s meant to be then Obama will find his way back, when the time is right but, until then, let’s all be glad that he’s having such a nice time.
You know he certainly deserves this. You want to be happy for him but, still, you can’t help but stare longing at the pictures and wish things had worked out differently. Play it cool though, you never know what's just around the corner.
