The content Gods of Reddit have delivered once again this morning and revealed that there is a huge debate going on around baby-wearing at weddings. According to an AITA post, one bridesmaid is considering wearing her one-year-old in a sling during the ceremony. Naturally, it has prompted a lot of opinions.
‘My best friend is getting married next October and my little one will be 14 months then,’ the post starts. ‘I’m thinking of asking her how she feels about me wearing baby in a pretty ring sling during the wedding…I just saw some pics of a baby-wearing bridesmaid that gave me the idea.’
According to the Reddit user, the bride is well aware her daughter will be attending the ceremony and offered for her mother to look after her during it. However, as she typically wears her baby in a sling, baby-wearing during the ceremony would seem to be her preference.
‘How can I ask her and leave it open for her to feel comfortable saying no?’ the bridesmaid asks fellow Reddit users. And boy did she get a lot of answers.
Not only did the thread blow up on Reddit, it was also shared to a Facebook group called ‘that’s it, I’m wedding shaming’ with the caption ‘Please do not.’ With almost 2000 comments, it’s clear wearing a baby during a wedding ceremony is a contentious issue.
On the one hand, any parent who practises attachment parenting may feel uncomfortable removing their baby from the closeness of their body for anything they don’t necessarily need to. But, is a wedding not a sufficient reason to put the baby down?
According to Brides, the average length of a wedding ceremony is 20-30 minutes, so not really a long stint without holding your baby. Plus, holding the baby at the altar makes for a much riskier ceremony when it comes to distractions. The benefit of having someone else look after the baby is that they can distract them if they become uncomfortable, or take them for a little stroll should they start uncontrollably crying.
And yet, baby-wearing during a wedding ceremony has been a talking point this year – with one story of a bride who wore her baby down the aisle going viral in February. In fact, millennial parenting site Romper is reporting it as a trend on the rise.
Ultimately, it’s of course down to the couple getting married and guest – people may have a lot of opinions, but the only ones that really matter are those in the actual wedding party.
