The comedian, writer and actor Amy Schumer has teamed up with her cousin, the US senator Chuck Schumer, to speak out about lax American gun laws.
At a press conference in New York yesterday, Amy Schumer described the issue as being ‘very personal to me’ after a gunman shot and killed two women and wounded nine other people at a screening of her new film, Trainwreck.
Schumer is far from the first entertainment star to use her public profile to raise the issue of gun control. In 2012, a host of celebrities, including Beyoncé, Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx, Carey Mulligan, Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd and Sarah Silverman, made a video for the Demand A Plan campaign echoing Schumer’s call that Enough is Enough.
While for many in the UK the controls sought by the Schumers may not seem to go far enough, they are nevertheless a step in the right direction, calling for ‘a background check system without holes and fatal flaws,’ that will make it harder for guns to be sold to people with a history of violence and mental illness.
‘Preventing dangerous people from getting guns is very possible,’ said Schumer. Let’s hope she’s right.
